  2. Melbourne

Melbourne is acknowledged as the cultural capital of Australia and you could spend your whole break there seeing the sights. Take the chance though to hire a car in Melbourne to see what’s outside the city too. There are the Dandenong Ranges, a beautiful chain of mountains and also the wine lands around the city.

What can you Tell me About Melbourne?
The city is fiercely proud of its achievements and rightly so. The city was founded less than half a century after Australia itself and has seen monumental changes over time, being a gold rush city and then the capital of Australia until replaced by Canberra. The city is one of the cultural and sporting highlights of the country and thousands flock there each year to see the sights which include the largest museum in the southern hemisphere and many old buildings from Melbourne’s early days.

How do I get to Melbourne?
The train from Adelaide or Sydney is a slow but beautiful way of getting into the city but most choose to take the plane into Australia’s second busiest airport, Melbourne Airport or to the domestic only, Avalon Airport, just under forty miles from the city. Flights to Melbourne operate from all the state capitals as well as from many smaller cities and towns so it’s easy to get to Melbourne by plane. Melbourne’s main airport is thirteen miles from the city centre with only road access to it. Hire cars are a popular method of getting into the city but public buses and taxis are also available.

What is There to See and Do in Melbourne?
There is really just so much to do but include the following on your itinerary; the Parliament Building of Victoria, The Melbourne Museum, the largest south of the Equator, the Botanical Gardens and Woodlands Historic Park which has buildings dating back to Melbourne’s early days. Finally you should also try to see an Australian Rules football match or a cricket match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground or the Etihad Stadium.
