Some of the oldest buildings in Australia can be found in historic Hobart and a journey through the city using a hire car from Hobart will take you back in time to the days of the penal colony founded there over 200 years ago.

Tell me About Hobart?
Hobart is the largest city and the capital of the island state of Tasmania. It has the honour of being the second oldest city in Australia, formed from a penal colony established in 1803. Whilst the city today is a million miles from its inauspicious beginnings, there is a lot of the evidence of old Hobart to be seen around the city. Hobart grew from its importance in the southern whaling industry but suffered a decline as the industry fell away in the 20th century.

How do I get Into Hobart?
Hobart’s Airport stretches the point by calling itself an international airport for the only flight outside of Australia is to what is unlikely to be high on everyone’s holiday list, Antarctica. In fact the Antarctica flight is to the scientific research facility there and all of Hobart’s other flights come in from airports on the eastern side of Australia. Travellers from Western or South Australia or Northern Territory will need to connect via either Sydney or Melbourne for flights to Hobart. Once at the airport, transport into the city can be by bus, taxi or most popularly, hire car.

What is There to See or Do in Hobart?
Spend some time at the markets that operate from the Salamanca district of the city. The buildings that line the streets were all warehouses relating to the whaling industry which have been sensitively converted to shops and cafes. Behind the market is the location known as Battery Point, one of the oldest parts of the city and full of old sandstone buildings from the city’s early days.
