Heave your luggage onto the transfer bus at the airport or take the easy option and head for your accommodation in a hire car at Alice Springs Airport. You might think that’s going to be an expensive option but when you consider the cost of excursions out of town to see the Red Centre, car hire at Alice Springs Airport can be a more sensible idea.
Why do People Travel to Alice Springs?
Most visitors go to Alice Springs to see life at the tough end of the scale in one of the country’s most isolated towns. The geography around the town is also remarkable and the sights of the Red Centre include the hostile environment of the Simpson Desert, the McDonnell Ranges and the almost continually dry Todd River. If you don’t want to go to all the effort of trekking out into the desert, the Desert Park has the surrounding region represented in miniature with many of habitats on display.
What can you tell me About Getting Into Alice Springs?
The town has a small regional airport which, because of the attractiveness of the location for visitors, saw nearly 0.75m passengers arrive there last year. There are flights from many of the country’s state capital airports such as
Cairns as well as flights from some of the smaller towns in the centre of the country.
Melbourne tops the visitor list with a fifth of all arrivals departing from the capital of Victoria. Onward travel from the airport is limited to the bus and a couple of taxis so a hire car is worth considering as an alternative low cost option.
What is the Airport Like?
It’s small, even though it handles a large number of passengers. There are no jet ways to board or disembark the aircraft from the terminal so in the height of summer you will start to cook on the journey between the plane and the terminal. Once inside, you’ll find that facilities are very good for an airport of its size with a couple of shops and cafes, an alehouse and whilst you won’t find a bank, there’s an ATM and a change machine as well as a post box.
